Use this early level resource to teach the concept of rhythm using the Kodály Method. It also introduces stick notation and rhythm syllables to support rhythm. Rhythm syllables: For teaching rhythm, Kodály and his associates chose rhythm syllables which express duration. They are voiced, never written as words. Their written representation is stem notation. With duration syllables it is possible for children to chant a pattern correctly in rhythm,

You may have heard this system even if you didn’t know it was part of the Kodály method: Ta for crotchets/quarter notes; Ti for quavers/eighth notes; And so on. Ta and ti-ti rhythm syllables q = Ta sd = ti-ti Q = rest (put motion on shoulders and stay silent for a beat) xccc = tika-tika w = two or ta-ah sxc In traditional music reading, one could read, “quarter note, two eighth notes, two eighth notes, quarter note” etc. Or one could simply tap out the rhythm. In a Kodály music class, traditional note value names are given syllable names.

Likewise, color coding the music notes works well for instruments. However, shape notes work better for singers, because shape notes work together with moveable Do solfege.

The Kodaly Method is a way of developing musical skills and teaching musical concepts beginning in very young children.
